Oh dear. It seems a couple in Canada have decided to raise a genderless child.
What does this say?
"we dont want to limit him/her with what he/she wants to be. If he/she wants to do things that are not normal for his/her gender, let him/her!"
Okay. Good job parents. You win the "craziest way to screw up your kid" medal. With good intentions.
But what are you really teaching it?
You are missing an opportunity to teach a child about overcoming boundries as you teach it to ignore them. Good job. As we all know, if you ignore your problems, they go away.
You are missing an opportunity to raise a child to accept and love himself as he is, and teaching him to hide what is true depending on how he feels at the moment. Yup. Those crazy teenage years are going to go even smoother when you dont even know if its okay to accept yourself because your parent have been hiding your gender your whole life.
You are creating expectations in a child while you claim to be avoiding them. "Son, Be what you want to be"! "I want to be a boy." "But you dont have to, we hid your gender so you could be a girl!" "But I want to be a boy." "Then your mother and I did all this for NOTHING?!?"
It seems to me that you are trying to make a child be free and make personal choices that reflect who they are inside, but as a HUMAN there are certian things that you must submit to.
Gravity works on earth, no matter how free your spirit is.
A child needs boundries to become a decent member of society. Learning to cope with, to grow with and yes, to overcome boundries is a very essential part of childhood. Raise a child to accept their sex, and to OVERCOME any stigma that is attached to it. The damage that is caused by raising a "genderless" child overshadows any good that may come from allowing the child to make his or her choices.
All I can say is, if she wants to write her name in the snow, she better have some mad hula-hoop skills. ;)
